Not all metals are created equal.
When we say the Tempest is made from anodized aluminum, we’re not just flexing, we’re pointing to one of the most advanced and durable surface treatments available for metal. It’s what gives the Tempest its distinctive matte finish, its color, and its resilience. And it’s a big reason the pipe is so damn good.
Why anodizing is ideal for smoking gear:
-
Heat resistant: It doesn’t melt, burn, or release fumes under normal flame or ember heat.
-
Inert and non-toxic: The anodized surface is chemically stable. No taste, no smell, no reactions.
-
No coating to burn off: It’s not paint. It’s not powder. It’s part of the metal itself.
-
Corrosion-resistant: It prevents raw aluminum from oxidizing or reacting with moisture or oils.
-
Durable: It won’t chip, flake, or wear down with use. It’s harder than the base aluminum.
-
Easy to clean: The sealed surface resists buildup, smudging, and grime.
-
Design-friendly: It allows for subtle textures, rich colors, and a premium matte finish that doesn’t look like anything else on the shelf.

Anodizing is an electrochemical process. It thickens the natural oxide layer that forms on aluminum, then seals it. That layer is bonded to the metal—it doesn’t sit on top of it. You can’t peel it. You can’t scratch it off. It’s part of the structure now.

Other finishes? They can’t compete. Paint and enamel burn. Powder coat chips. Raw aluminum oxidizes. None of them were good enough for the Tempest. We wanted something you could use every day, clean with ease, and pass on when you're done.

Anodized aluminum isn’t overkill, it’s a trusted material used in aerospace, architecture, surgical gear, and cookware for a reason. Our goal is to help clear up the misunderstanding around metal pipes, especially aluminum. When done right, it’s not just safe—it’s one of the best materials you can use.
