What is the titanium screen?
The titanium screen (sometimes called a filter) is an optional insert that sits under the Tempest bowl. It holds small loads and extracts in place that would otherwise fall through the bottom of the bowl. For a regular bowl, you don’t need it. Tempest works fully without it.
What it does
The bowl’s opening is sized for a regular load. A small pinch or an extract can slip through that opening into the labyrinth below. The screen sits between the bowl and the labyrinth and gives that material something to rest on, so it stays in the bowl where it belongs.
When to use it
Use the screen for two things:
- Small loads, when you only want a little.
- Extracts, which would otherwise drip or fall straight through.
For a regular bowl, leave it out and enjoy the most open draw Tempest has.
Why it clogs
Every screen clogs eventually. One that never did wouldn’t be catching anything. Extracts in particular leave residue, and as it builds, airflow tightens and the pull starts to feel restricted. That isn’t a fault. It’s the signal to swap it out.
Keep screens in rotation
The easiest way to live with a screen is to keep more than one. When the draw tightens, drop in a fresh screen and keep going, then clean the used ones whenever it suits you. The Tempest Field Kit includes four titanium screens.
How to install it
On Tempest, the screen goes under the bowl, not inside it. The bowl isn’t made for a screen on top. Instead, there’s a seat for one directly beneath it, in the cavity above the labyrinth.
- Open Tempest.
- Place the screen in the seat beneath the bowl, in the cavity above the labyrinth.
- Make sure it sits flat.
- Close Tempest and reinstall the lid.
How to clean it
- Pull the screen out of its seat.
- Drop it into isopropyl alcohol and let it soak for a few minutes.
- Brush it out.
- Rinse and let it dry.
Built from pure titanium
The screen is pure titanium, so it won’t rust, burn through, or wear out from normal use. Clean it as often as you like.
Common questions
Does Tempest need the titanium screen?
No. The screen is only for small loads and extracts. For a regular bowl, Tempest works fully without it.
Where does the screen go?
Under the bowl, not inside it. Tempest has a seat for the screen directly beneath the bowl, in the cavity above the labyrinth.
Can I use Tempest for extracts?
Yes, with the titanium screen in place. Without it, extracts fall through the bowl.
Is the titanium screen the same as the titanium filter?
Yes. It’s the same part. Some places call it a filter.
Why does my screen clog so quickly?
Extracts leave residue, and the screen is catching what it’s built to catch. Swap in a fresh one and clean the used one later.
How do I clean it?
Soak it in isopropyl alcohol for a few minutes, brush it out, rinse, and let it dry.
Can I use standard pipe screens in Tempest?
Yes. Any standard 1/2-inch screen fits in the seat beneath the bowl. You don’t need ours.
How long does a titanium screen last?
A standard screen is done when it burns through and no longer holds anything. Titanium doesn’t burn through, so you’re more likely to lose one than wear it out.
Where do I get more screens?
The Tempest Field Kit includes four titanium screens, plus a cleaning brush and a bowl pick.
